Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest certain calls made by the official, following the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
