The English and Welsh Placed Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major early clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their famous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

The Irish and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they secured a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the final, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the pools play out according to the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and France would remain separated from the likes of the English and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on that half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Major Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match aimed at launch the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have drawn Italy, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
